Rockies 2024

Two years ago, in 2022, we went to the Rockies for our 20th anniversary. We went back in December of 2022 because we enjoyed our fall trip so much, but it was the coldest December in years at -40°C! We had planned to go back in October of 2023, but due to my illness we had to reschedule for December. Not cold, but icy. And wind-packed snow at our favourite snowshoe places–not good for a dog who couldn’t quite balance her weight on top of the snow and kept post-holing through it.

We finally went back this fall, just as the aspen were coming into their autumn colours on the avalanche tracks and beside the road. There was even a skiff of snow on one of our days there. Which curtailed one of our hikes because the snow was nice and slick and combined with rocky terrain it didn’t make for the best conditions.

Here are some of my favourite shots from the trip.

Hilda Glacier from across the highway.
Dave and Silah in the proglacial valley at Hilda Glacier. The glacier is up to the right of the photo.
Looking down-valley from close to Hilda Glacier. You can see the grey flats are surrounded by rust-coloured debris that collapsed when the ice it covered melted out.
Hilda Glacier!
Mountain views.
Fresh snow on the Icefields parkway peaks.
Silah checks out the water at Boundary Lake. The Boundary glacier cirque is in the far background.
Boundary Stream, nicely showing the thin layer of snow on the rocks, which made hiking treacherous. This stream must have been huge to move the rocks that are scattered across the alluvial fan.
Lunch. Silah in her calming neck tube, kind of like a thundershirt lol.
Hiking back out of Boundary Lake. The alluvial fan is wider than we’d ever seen it, must’ve been a huge melt event from Boundary Glacier between 2013 and 2022.
