We’ve had some frosty mornings here on the Coast, and with the moisture in the air the conditions were perfect for forming fantastic crystals on leaves, fences, and in the soil.
The frost here nicely outlines the patterns of the leaf.
I really love the needle-like structure of these crystals on the front fence.
Here some of the crystals are already starting to fall off as the sun just starts to reach them.
This one looks like a mouth with hair around it.
This one is my favourite as it shows needle ice, which forms in wet ground and pushes nodules of dirt up from the ground as it grows. That’s why each set of crystals is dirty on top.
Too bad I didn’t find any hair ice, which usually grows on alder with cracks in the bark.
Here’s hoping we have a frosty Christmas and not a rainy one.
