Remington Rand Deluxe Model 5 portable typewriter
I picked up this Canadian-made beauty from a woman who was selling it on our local swap ‘n’ shop. She said it belonged to her mother, who got it in Germany. This particular model, the Remington Rand Deluxe No. 5, is from the 1940s. It’s a portable typewrite – even came with the case – and as such is a bit more bombproof than a non-portable typewriter.
I used to type up “news” stories on my Dad’s old typewriter when I was a kid. It made me feel like a “real” reporter. I wrote about the Challenger explosion, and the crash of the rollercoaster at West Edmonton Mall. I know I wrote about other things as well, but only those two stand out.
I got turned on to typewriters again by watching the documentary California Typewriter. It was a fascinating look into typewriter culture – though it really lacked many female characters.
This machine needs some TLC: a serious cleaning, a new ribbon (yes, you can actually still buy them for this model), and some testing to make sure everything works as it should.
But overall a pretty good find on a Saturday jaunt.
PS: Our local second hand store has a cabinet of “special” (aka more valuable) items that they sell via silent auction. They had a black Underwood typewriter in there this week, but unfortunately my bid was too low. I guess I was meant to get the Remington (who, by the way, are the same company who make firearms)!
