My author copies of my book arrived on Saturday, and we had a little celebration with “Narrative” sparkling wine from Naramata, and a slice of black forest cake for dessert. For today’s photo essay, I thought I’d share some of the pics that are in the book, which show various fieldwork locations and activities.
First, two maps (being a geographer, of course).
At age 4 learning to cross country ski. Though I don’t know how I would do it on those plastic planks and having left the poles behind me…At Hilda Glacier in 1998, measuring water quality in the proglacial stream. One of the choppers that aided our research in 2000 in the high Arctic, on the east coast of Ellesmere Island (79N). You can see our gear in the foreground – this was a research trip rather than a camp move trip. On top of the Nunatak at John Evans Glacier in 2001. It was my second summer season there, and climbing the Nunatak was a big milestone for me. You can see the mountains in the distance and a surface stream channel on the right of the image. The coolest thing ever. Once the surface water drained into the glacier in 2002, an artesian fountain formed on the glacier surface near the snout because it had nowhere to go but up. It waxed and waned in size – this was probably when it was at its highest. I’m standing next to a weather station I set up on a nunatak next to Andrei Glacier, in the north Coast Mountains of BC, in 2006. Digging a snow pit in the forest near Francois Lake in north-central BC, with the help of my two dogs: Jasper in a red jacket, and Tsuga. Jasper was just a little puppy then. Surface lake on Belcher Glacier, seen from the chopper in summer 2008.The view of Mount Coulthard in the southern Canadian Rockies, taken from a burned forest stand in 2008. This was the backdrop for our work in this stand, a stunning view!In spring of 2012 I visited the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest. This is me in front of the snow cat, which is how they get around in winter. It was a great experience!Celebrating our 20th anniversary in the Rockies, at Hilda Glacier where we got married, fall 2022.
Some of these pics are in the book, so you’ve had a sneak preview of what’s inside. But others are from my personal collection. Remember there are still two weeks to pre-order, see here for details!
