There’s nothing I enjoy more than a trip to the Rockies, so I’m going to shamelessly fill up this post with pictures my spouse took on our December trip. Be ready for mountains, snow, and our dog Silah.
It was chilly enough for a toque and puffy jacket, but not for long johns. Pretty mild for winter in Jasper – especially after last years’ -40°C trip.
We snowshoed partway into Hilda Glacier (you can see it in the far end of the picture) but the snow was terrible – a packed wind crust on top with sugar below. As soon as Silah broke through the crust, she got stuck in the snow underneath. Luckily we found a track someone else had made a few days before that we could follow without sinking in too far.
Heading out of the Hilda valley – we cut our trip a bit short as Silah was shivering with cold.
We did a couple of walks on Pyramid Lake – nice packed snow to walk on and views all around.
This is Silah’s happy face, as she was running towards Dave on the lake.
Just a girl and her dog on the lake, with Pyramid Mountain in the background.
Pyramid Lake with red Adirondack chairs on the dock.
Dave and Silah on the lake – don’t get many photos of the guy who’s usually the photographer!
The wind howling over the Athabasca Glacier at the Columbia Icefield. You can still see bare ice on the left of the glacier and on the icefalls.

I’m used to Silah…
