V is for Validation

As scientists we’re constantly subject to external assessment and validation – which maybe also serves to reassure us. That our hypotheses are correct, our experiments properly designed and working, and our papers making contributions to the research field. That we’re good enough to be awarded certain grants, and have fulfilled the requirements to be granted tenure. That our students are learning from our classes and our grad students are good ambassadors for our labs. The list goes on.

What if we just stepped back for a minute. Took stock of where we’re at and what we’ve done.
Think about it.
Do you enjoy your research? Are you proud of your outputs – whether they’re papers or students? Are you comfortable with your career direction and choices?
Then forget all that external stuff. Put your feet up with a glass of scotch and enjoy your own validation.

  1. Even most artists need validation (of a slightly different bent). I'm trying to visit all the A-Z Challenge Blogs this month. My alphabet is at myqualityday.blogspot.com

  2. Every human desires some form of validation. Good "V" post. New follower here. I’m enjoying reading my fellow “A to Z”ers. I look forward to visiting again. Sylviahttp://www.writinginwonderland.blogspot.com/
